Why Christians Should Not Fear AI

“There is no wisdom or understanding or counsel against the Lord.” (Proverbs 21:30)

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked concern and alarmism, not unlike the fears surrounding the “Y2K” bug at the turn of the millennium. Back then, many worried that computers, unprepared for the year 2000, would trigger global catastrophes. Yet, no disasters materialized. Instead, Russia’s President Boris Yeltsin stole headlines by resigning on New Year’s Eve 1999, a geopolitical event that shaped the turn of the century.

Today, doomsday prophets on the internet warn that AI and AI-powered robots will eliminate most jobs, leading to global mass unemployment. These concerns deserve serious consideration. As Christians, we should pray for wisdom to navigate AI’s development and use our democratic influence to ensure AI is regulated in ways that protect human rights. AI carries risks of misuse, particularly in totalitarian regimes but also in democracies, where it could contribute to an increasingly controlled society.

Yet, AI’s emergence is no surprise to God. He is the Creator of all things, including the technological advancements that have made AI possible. He is neither anxious nor on the verge of losing control. Proverbs 21:30 reminds us that no human wisdom or plan can challenge God and His kingdom.

According to biblical scholars, believers are urged in Scripture to “fear not” or “do not be afraid” approximately 365 times—one encouragement for every day of the year. This timeless assurance from God, conveying comfort and courage, applies regardless of time or technology, with or without AI.

Historically, new technologies have always brought disruption, and AI will undoubtedly transform the job market. Professions we take for granted today may vanish as AI or robots take over their functions. But as believers, we have no reason to fear. God is Jehovah Jireh, our Provider, and He has promised to care for His children. In an AI-driven world, where information becomes instantly accessible no matter where one is, believers who listen to God’s voice will have a unique advantage. As Jesus says in John 10:27:

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

This closeness to God offers guidance and security, regardless of technological changes.

Rather than fearing AI, we should view it as we do other modern technologies—a neutral tool that can be used for good or evil. When television was introduced, many Christians saw it as a “tool of Satan.” Indeed, TV has spread ungodly values, but Christian television has also enabled the gospel to reach places previously difficult to access. Similarly, AI is neutral; its impact depends on how we use it.

As God calls us to live without fear and trust in His provision and guidance as our Shepherd, we as believers should focus on using AI for good while maintaining a healthy skepticism about potential misuse. We can leverage AI to spread the gospel, foster economic prosperity, and serve our communities effectively. Guided by God’s wisdom, which surpasses all human and technological intelligence, we can approach the future with confidence and courage.
